This Physician will provide coverage in any Medical Service Area; Urgent Care, CLC, Palliative Care Unit, Stress Test lab and other clinical areas, such as, the MOVE and infusion clinics after appropriate and adequate orientation and training. Majority of the assignment will be in the Urgent Care, Pain Resource Team and CLC/Palliative Care Unit. May be asked to cover during administrative hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as the need arises. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: RECENT EXPERIENCE (WITHIN THE LAST 10 YEARS) in Outpatient Medical clinic, Urgent Care/Emergency Room; Experience in Geriatric Medicine a plus. Scope of Duties: Participate in expanding the facility Residency education program at the discretion of the Medical Service Chief. This Physician will utilize services such as Video Urgent care and other Tele Medicine programs when appropriate after adequate and appropriate training. Clinical and Administrative - Completes all duties as assigned; Will provide patient care within service area as assigned by service Chief - Participates in the provision of Pain Management, Mental Health, and End of Life Care to Veterans as appropriate - Participates in the use of clinical practice guidelines, provision of standard of care to patients, and meets relevant performance measures as mandated by Veterans Health Administration (VHA). - Reports quality of care issues promptly through established mechanisms. - Maintains timely and complete patient medical records that meet Compliance Program and Joint Commission requirements. - Mentors Nurse Practitioners (NP) and/or Physician Assistants (PA). Guides clinical management of complex patients consulted asked by mid-level providers, including patients with pain issues, and those requiring narcotic management, as appropriate in clinical setting within own service areas - Participates in all Medical Staff functions as required by the VAMC Medical Staff Bylaws. - Consults specialty physicians as appropriate and collaborates with specialty clinics for appropriate and streamlined patient care. - Surrogate for view alert coverage of other physicians/providers for patient care issues. This function would ensure that all labs, consults, and other tests ordered by practitioners on leave are indeed reviewed for appropriate action or disposition. - Must be Basic Life Support (BLS) and ACLS certified. - Supervision of PA and/or NP may require collaboration of controlled substance prescriptions. - Takes into consideration the unique needs of female veteran patients. B. Communication - Meets with the Medical Service Associate Supervisor and the Chief of Medicine and/or the Chief of Staff as necessary to ensure that the goals and objectives of the VAMC are met. - Communicates with other healthcare providers, as necessary, to ensure the timely access and continuity of care to Veterans. - Communicates clearly with the NP or PA that he/she oversee. This entails cosignage of all NP/PA notes when applicable. This communication should be clear, professional, and directly related to medical care provided to patients. C. Education/Training - Participates in the education/training of personnel as requested. - Completes required VA education and annual training in a timely fashion. - Maintains CME credits as required by state law. - Supervises Medical residents, Students and acts as liaison with residency and university training programs at VAMC as appropriate. - Completes Talent Management System (TMS), ongoing education provided by the VA on time. D. Quality Assessment (QA)/ Utilization Review (UR)/ Performance Improvement (PI) - Participates in all relevant QA/UR/PI activities as required. - Cooperates with, and participates in, Risk Management activities as necessary and as required by the service chief. E. Recruitment - Meets and evaluates potential physician, NP, and PA candidates as asked by the Medical Service Associate Supervisor for Medical Specialty, Urgent Care Medical Director, or the Chief of Medicine - Assists in orientation of new practitioners to the practice.
