The incumbent serves as the Chief Medical Officer for one of eighteen Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs) of the Veterans Health Administration. The VISNs deliver health care services through a network of community-based and home care services, linked access points, medical centers and clinics. VISN programs are coordinated with those of other VISNs located throughout the country. A Headquarters in Washington, DC, provides policy development and support to VISN operations.
Providing Health Care for Veterans: The Veterans Health Administration is America’s largest integrated health care system, providing care at 1,255 health care facilities, including 170 medical centers and 1,074 outpatient sites of care of varying complexity (VHA outpatient clinics), serving 9 million enrolled Veterans each year.
